DESCRIPTION:Friends of WMC workers carry a tarp full of knotweed \nOur recent June 5 Knotweed Day was a great success–we had 13 people devote a total of 44 hours to removing this invasive plant.  However\, some knotweed remains\, so if you missed the first day here is your chance to join the battle.  We will be working from 9 to noon tomorrow\, Wednesday June 8.  Wear long pants and long sleeve shirt\, and bring work gloves; come and go as you please.  There is also a lot of work to be done in the garden if you prefer that.

DESCRIPTION:Japanese Knotweed \n Japanese knotweed is an invasive plant — and experts tell us that if nothing is done the knotweed will eventually take over\, contributing to stream bank erosion and killing  native plants that offer better food and habitat to the birds\, frogs  and beneficial insects that live in our park.  One important step in controlling its spread is to cut the stalks in early June.  Please turn out for our work day — we will cut and safely dispose of as many stems as we can!  Come and go as you please\,  Refreshments will be provided. \n\nDO bring work gloves and wear long pants and tough footwear.\nDON’T bring your dog.  Cutting tools are sharp and we don’t want any accidents!\nfor more info on knotweed\, see http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb1081649.pdf\n\nKnotweed Penitentiary \nBy the way you may have noticed this wire-and-pallet pen at the far end of the park.  This will be used to stack knotweed stalks\, because if any part of the plant — even a piece as small as 1/2″– touches the ground or enters the stream\, it will send down roots and make a new plant.

DESCRIPTION:When we first began the Wildlife and Respite garden project last year\, we offered the chance to dedicate a memorial tree to the first five people who donated $150 to the project.  Each tree will wear a tag with its common and botanical name\, plus the name of its designated honoree.  Now the five trees we planted in the Wildlife and Respite Garden last fall have.officially made it through the winter\, and our tree tags have arrived!  On Friday\, June 5 at 5 pm\, Friends of WMC member Helene Feinberg Walker is bringing lemonade and cookies\, so be sure to stop by in the Wildlife Garden for refreshments and Meet the Trees!

DESCRIPTION:Please Join us for our second Annual Meeting!  It will be held on Sunday\, March 8 at 2 p.m. at Beth David\, 1130 Vaughan Lane\, Gladwyne\, PA 19035.  We’ll report briefly on accomplishments in 2014 and plans for 2015. \nAfter the report\, we’ll have  a conversation with Jerry Francis\, President of the Lower Merion Historical Society\,  Jerry will share some fascinating aspects of  history of the Mill Creek Valley\, now home to both West Mill Creek and Rolling Hill dog parks. The valley was inhabited by the Lenape and later became an industrial center for our early European settlers who used Mill Creek to power their mills. There will be an exhibit and a question and answer session to help gain a better understanding of the parks and their environs. \nAfter Jerry’s talk\, we’ll have an opportunity to enjoy conversation and refreshments.  We’ll also be handing out a survey form to get feedback and ideas from all members\, so come prepared with your suggestions!

SUMMARY:SANTA PAWS IS COMING TO TOWN!
DESCRIPTION:Bring your dog to visit Santa Paws– and don’t forget to bring your camera!  Santa Paws will be available to create an unforgettable photo op with your dog.   All good dogs will receive a dog biscuit\, and we will have hot chocolate available for the humans in attendance.   This is a holiday fundraiser for less fortunate dogs in the city shelters funded by Pennsylvania S.P.C.A.  All proceeds from the event will go to P.S.P.C.A.  We will accept checks made out to P.S.P.C.A. or cash–all funds raised will go to this good cause.
