SUMMARY:Dog Memorial Log/Howl-o-Ween: Two Events on One Day!
DESCRIPTION:At 2 pm on Sunday\, October 28\, we will inaugurate our new Friends of West Mill Creek Park Dog Memorial Log.  This log\, the fallen cherry tree near the park entrance\, is an especially fitting memorial log  to our departed canine park regulars — though the tree fell several years ago\, it still puts out green shoots each Spring.  We invite our members to place a departed dog’s I.D. tag on the log using the nails provided.  If you can’t make it on the 28th\, you can still add your dog’s memorial tag any time. \nFollowing the Dog Memorial Log inauguration\, we will host a Howl-o-Ween parade.  Bring your dog in costume for a fun photo opportunity of your dog and his or her friends!  Every dog in costume gets a Howloween treat\, and if he or she does a trick\, an extra treat and maybe a chance for YouTube stardom! \n

DESCRIPTION:Our Annual Meeting will begin with a short report on events and accomplishments  in 2017 and plans for 2018.  Next\, Tom Brightman\, Land Stewardship Manager for Longwood Gardens\, will give a talk on West Mill Creek Park: an Ecological Perspective.   Tom grew up in the area and spent a lot of time at West Mill Creek Park as a boy.  He will discuss the history and current state of the the Mill Creek watershed and explain why riparian buffers and woodland corridors benefit both humans and wildlife.  He will also discuss stewardship techniques to keep our park healthy while blending human\, canine\, and ecological needs in the landscape.

DESCRIPTION:Japanese Knotweed \n Japanese knotweed is an invasive plant — and experts tell us that if nothing is done the knotweed will eventually take over\, contributing to stream bank erosion and killing  native plants that offer better food and habitat to the birds\, frogs  and beneficial insects that live in our park.  One important step in controlling its spread is to cut the stalks in early June.  Please turn out for our work day — we will cut and safely dispose of as many stems as we can!  Come and go as you please\,  Refreshments will be provided. \n\nDO bring work gloves and wear long pants and tough footwear.\nDON’T bring your dog.  Cutting tools are sharp and we don’t want any accidents!\nfor more info on knotweed\, see http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb1081649.pdf\n\nKnotweed Penitentiary \nBy the way you may have noticed this wire-and-pallet pen at the far end of the park.  This will be used to stack knotweed stalks\, because if any part of the plant — even a piece as small as 1/2″– touches the ground or enters the stream\, it will send down roots and make a new plant.

SUMMARY:Go for the Green Award
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of West Mill Creek Park has won a Go for the Green Award!  Lower Merion Township’s Environmental Advisory Council has given us this award to recognize the ecological and educational benefits of our Wildlife and Respite Garden to the Township and our work in creating and maintaining the garden.  If you haven’t seen Appleford\, it’s a lovely historic house and garden\, well worth a visit in its own right.  Anyone who would like to attend is welcome to come and cheer us on.

DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce that Santa Paws will visit the park again this year.  He will give a dog biscuit to each good dog and pose for a photo op\, so bring your camera or cell phone.  In the holiday spirit\, all donations received at this event will go to the Pennsylvania S.P.C.A. to aid the  less fortunate pups in our area.

SUMMARY:Black Friday in the Garden
DESCRIPTION:This Black Friday\, why spend all day shopping for stuff you don’t really need? Instead\, work off those turkey calories at our Fall Cleanup Workday in the Wildlife and Respite Garden. We will be raking up the big sycamore leaves\, weeding\, and (if possible) we will  also chop up the leaves with a lawnmower and return them to the garden as mulch.  Bring work gloves and a rake if you have one (we will have extras).  As always\, come and go as you please\, no need to stay for the whole two hours.

DESCRIPTION:In the Thanksgiving spirit\, we are hosting a thank-you cocktail party for all of our Active Members (those who have supported us by volunteering at the garden or through a financial donation during 2015).  Please come and enjoy the company of your fellow denizens of the dog park without having to keep a watchful eye on your dog at the same time! \nNOTE:  An e-invitation will be sent to each active member about 4 weeks before the event.  If you are an Active Member and don’t get an invitation\, either our record keeping is at fault or it disappeared into cyberspace.  Be sure to contact someone on the Steering Committee and we will correct our list–every Active Member is included!
